Bahman Mohassess (born December 30, 1930, in Rasht – passed away August 27, 2010) was an Iranian painter, sculptor, print maker, and pioneering translator. He was among the first Iranian artists to adopt Western painting techniques while infusing them with an Eastern perspective. Many view him as influenced by Picasso, with some even dubbing him the “Iranian Picasso,” acknowledging the undeniable Iranian essence present in his works despite the use of Western techniques and perspectives. Behzad Mohassess’s avant-garde paintings are considered significant contributions to modern Iranian art.
In a 1394 (2015) survey conducted by the journal “Harfeh,” which aimed to select the top ten emerging artists in Iran’s avant-garde art scene from among a hundred artists and art critics surveyed, Mohassess ranked at the forefront of the list of avant-garde Iranian artists from the twentieth century to the present day.
